What happens when business turns to pleasure?

Alec Compton’s dream job at a Wall Street investment firm is on the line if he can’t close a make-or-break takeover deal by the end of the year.

The buyer is none other than world-renowned billionaire and corporate raider Brant Linton, recently named one of the hottest and most eligible gay businessmen. Electricity crackles at their first meeting, and Alec’s thoughts drift far from business, despite his distaste for Brant’s business practices.

When Brant takes off early to spend Christmas with his sister’s family on the exclusive French Polynesian island of Taha’a, Alec has no choice but to follow if he wants to get Brant to sign on the dotted line. But Brant’s sister has forbidden him from conducting business during the holidays and Alec must masquerade as Brant’s boyfriend lest she find out what they’re really up to.

Then business turns into pleasure, but neither Brant nor Alec know whether the other is there for the deal, or for something more personal in EM Lynley’s sizzling holiday novella A Christmas Bonus.

Delectable Cover Reveal: 12 Courses by EM Lynley

12Courses400

35% off when you pre-order by November 30!

12 Courses, the sixth book in the Delectable Series is officially coming soon!

A bit about the book:

Thom Kennedy Leyton returns to San Francisco to take up the reins of Graze, one of the city’s best restaurants, years after he lost his job when his innovative new set of recipes was stolen. Thom’s loss of self-esteem eventually caused his boyfriend, Blake Warner, to end their relationship, sending Thom into a deep depression.

Now, cured of fifty excess pounds and any attraction to Blake, Thom’s back in town. Blake catches him off guard when he visits Graze several days in a row, and Thom lets himself get caught up in Blake’s allure, despite knowing better. Thom juggles a renewed relationship with Blake, a Christmas visit from his parents, and an important holiday menu based on a Twelve Days of Christmas theme.

When an old acquaintance reveals that Blake knows more about the theft of the recipes than he lets on, Thom doesn’t know whom to trust. But the truth isn’t quite that simple, and Thom won’t be able to decide if Blake deserves a place in his life until he learns exactly what happened years ago.

Release date: December 23.

Available now for pre-order at Dreamspinner Press.

The inspiration

I love to cook. If you’ve met me, you probably also know I love to eat. I have food and cooking scenes in all of my books, so it was inevitable I would write a series featuring chefs and winemakers, and other men in the restaurant world.

For this sixth installment in the Delectable Series, I needed to come up with some familiar, yet completely different. Another story about another chef just wasn’t going to do it for me or for fans of the series.

I decided to set myself a challenge: a new chef trying to convince his bosses to take a big chance on a vegan Twelve Nights of Christmas menu. Not only is Thom Kennedy trying to earn his way back to the top, but he’s chosen an incredibly tricky and risky way of doing it.

Thom actually had it easy. I was the one struggling to create a menu as elaborate as Thom needed. Not being a chef myself, coming up with a dozen unique vegan dishes worthy of a holiday special event taxed my brain more than anything I’ve written. I probably spent more time creating the menu than writing the story.

I did not consult with any professional chefs, so my imaginary Twelve Courses may not even work in actuality. That’s why I haven’t included any recipes this time around, though I will be sharing Blake’s Lobster Grilled Cheese Menu on my blog for release day.

What do you think?

Do you eat vegan or vegetarian food? Do you actively avoid it?

About the Book

The Precious Gems Series is a little like Romancing the Stone meets Indiana Jones.

14627Here’s the blurb. If you can incorporate one of the themes into the title it’s more likely to work. I’ve also put some photos of items they are looking for or locations in the book to inspire your creativity.

Draft blurb

Reed Acton has something more difficult to face this time around: a visit from Trent Copeland’s parents. He’s less equipped to handle hugs and holidays than the Taliban or international art thieves. When he’s assigned a case to track down a set of gold Babylonian artifacts looted from the Iraqi National Museum after the 2003 fall of Baghdad, things start to look up. The investigation takes him and Trent to Istanbul and then to an army base on US soil where Reed has to confront the worst demons from his past–his own parents–in order to find out which soldiers have been selling off the smuggled items.

EM Quote

Irresistible Forces

Army Ranger Logan Flynn thought getting captured by Taliban was the worst thing that could happen, until his old Ranger School crush Brody Mitchell is part of the team tasked to retrieve him. Long-suppressed emotions resurface post-DADT, until something worse from Logan’s past threatens to derail their chances for a lasting relationship.

EXCERPT:

Logan Flynn was near the end of the row between two empty beds. Even in partial profile, Brody recognized him. Even forty pounds lighter and with a dark shaggy beard against pale skin. Propped up with some pillows, he had his left arm in a sling.

He used to know every inch and contour of Logan Flynn’s body. Not from the kind of intimacy he might have wanted but because they had spent so much time together. In the barracks, the inevitable communal showers, and the long days and short nights that practically defined Ranger School.

How could Brody not have known him instantly even in that filthy Afghan hut?

The hospital gown was loose across his shoulders. Shoulders Brody remembered as broad and muscular. Shoulders Brody fell asleep dreaming about touching and kissing and…

Seeing him again brought back a rush of emotions Brody thought he was finished with but he’d been mistaken. Maybe it’s been too long for a simple conversation to hurt anymore.

He swallowed and tentatively made his way to Logan Flynn’s bed.

Or maybe not.

Logan didn’t see or hear him approach, even as Brody stood at the foot of his bed. Close up, Flynn looked to be in even worse shape, in the bright unforgiving light of the hospital.

“Logan?”

No response.

“Logan. It’s….”

Logan turned toward Brody, looking through him at first, then his eyes focused.

“Brody?” The hoarse whisper sent daggers through every nerve in Brody’s body. So familiar, yet so full of pain it hurt to hear him.

“Hey.”

“Hey.” Finally, Logan smiled. It took a moment for the obvious gladness to make its way from his mouth to his eyes. “Brody.”

Brody wished he could hold onto something for dear life. The sound of his name on Logan’s lips sent so many memories—and even more dreams and fantasies—racing through his mind and body. No, don’t think about that. Not now. Not here.

“You look good, Logan.”

Logan shook his head but he smiled even more broadly. The dark eyes were alive again, bright and lively, now even more of a contrast to the pale skin. “Fuck off.”

He was the same old Logan in so many ways, even though he didn’t resemble the man in Brody’s memory at all in others. Getting captured by the Taliban could do that to a guy. Brody grabbed an ugly orange plastic chair and dragged it over to the side of the bed, ignoring its scrape across the floor like nails on a chalkboard. The men in beds across the way stared with narrowed, angry eyes.

“So what have you been doing with yourself for the past six years, Flynn?”

It had been more than six years since he had last seen Logan Flynn, not counting the previous day’s rescue. Before that, it had been the day after graduation from Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia. For seven weeks of solid hell they’d been buddies. You were never supposed to be out of sight of your Ranger buddy, ever. They’d been everything to each other—almost everything—and then they hadn’t set eyes on each other since. It had been some cruel twist of logistics and staffing that they’d never ended up in the same unit or base during the intervening years.

“Well, lately, a bit of sightseeing.” Logan grinned. “You?”

“The same. I heard Afghanistan was the place to be, so I booked a trip. Beats Iraq.”

“Really? I though Iraq was the hot ticket.”

“Oh, it was. But that party’s over.” Brody paused. What the hell else was there to say? They had nothing in common anymore. A few shared weeks six years ago didn’t make them friends. “Glad you’re doing okay.” Best not to ask, just assume.

“Th-thanks. For bringing us—me—back.”

Brody just nodded. He started to get up.

“How’s Staub?”

Not fast enough. “He’s doing good. Causing trouble with the nurses. I heard that if you hadn’t treated him so quickly he might not be in as good shape. Coulda bled out on the bird.”

“Glad I could save someone.” Logan’s toneless voice almost brought tears to Brody’s eyes.

Logan frowned at Brody for a moment and then the corners of his mouth came back to neutral. He didn’t break the gaze and Brody waited, thinking Logan was going to say something.

“Brody….”

He’d been waiting six years for Logan to say his name like that.

Arctic Fire is HOT…. read on:

Captain Jack Turner is at a crossroads. A routine mission to the Far North gets him away from his desk, but he’d rather be anywhere else. The Arctic’s in Canadian Ranger Kin Carsen’s blood, but with Jack, he’s on unfamiliar ground. When they’re stranded by a blizzard, unexpected desire begins to burn…

EXCERPT

Jesus Christ it was cold.

inspiration for Jack2_arctic fire

Keira’s inspiration for Jack! Hottie Matt Czuchry.

With fingers stiff in his gloves, Jack flicked on his little flashlight under his sleeping bag. It was only zero-four-hundred, but it had been dark for so many hours it felt as though the night would never end. It must have clouded over, since there was no light from the moon making its way through the tent walls. He shuddered to think of what it was like in the winter when the sun barely rose at all.

Carefully, he pointed the flashlight around the tent, aiming it high to avoid waking Kin, who slept peacefully a few feet away. The red of Kin’s toque peeked out from his sleeping bag, and Jack could see his closed eyes and his nose. He was breathing deeply and evenly.

The odds of turning on the stove without waking him were nil, so Jack stayed put, shivering in his sleeping bag. Kin didn’t seem bothered by the cold at all, but Jack’s teeth chattered. He wanted to wrap himself in one of the pelts beneath them, but the idea of moving out of his bag was not appealing.

He should have turned off the flashlight since he was wasting the battery, but he found himself watching Kin sleep. He’d shared tents with dozens of men over the years, but none had intrigued him like Kin Carsen did. Not even Grant. He winced at the familiar sting of guilt twisting in his gut.

His scars flared to life, and he scrabbled at the back of his neck and shoulder, dropping the flashlight with a thud, the beam of light spinning around the tent. It was as if his flesh was burning again, and it prickled unbearably. He yanked off his gloves to scratch properly, squirming in the tight sleeping bag.

“Jack?” Kin murmured.

“I’m fine,” he gritted out. “Go back to sleep.”

Kin’s tone was sharp, all drowsiness vanished. “What is it?”

The light shone in his face, and Jack squeezed his eyes shut and burrowed into his bag. “I said it’s nothing. Leave me the hell alone.” He dug his blunt nails into his skin even though he knew it would pass faster if he left the scars untouched. The doctors said the itching was all in his head, but it was hard to believe when he trembled with hot prickles. At least he didn’t feel as cold.

“I’m only trying to help.”

“Then don’t. I don’t need your help.”

“Well, excuse the fuck out of me. Sir.”

The flashlight snapped off, and when Jack opened his eyes the tent was black again. Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. He breathed heavily through his nose, forcing himself to stop scratching. “I’m sorry. It’s not you, okay? It’s a hundred percent me. I’m a bag of shit lately.”

There was silence for a long moment. Then, “Is that the official diagnosis?”

Jack barked out a laugh, some of the tension leeching from his body. He felt around for his gloves but couldn’t find them, so he curled his hands against his chest in the sleeping bag. “It should be. Sorry for being a drama queen. You’re more patient than I would be stuck with an FNG.”

“You’ll have to enlighten me.”

“Fucking new guy.”

inspiration for Jack_arctic fireKin laughed softly, and Jack wished he could see the little dimples that creased his cheeks. He tried to think of something else he could say to make him laugh. “I wouldn’t blame you if your GAFF was pretty low right now.”

“Okay, I’ll bite.”

“Give a fuck factor.”

Kin laughed again, and despite the cold Jack felt a bloom of warmth in his chest.

“Do you have an army to English dictionary? My students would love these.”

“No, but someone should write one.”

“Maybe that should be your next assignment.”

“Maybe.”

Jack breathed easily again. There was something nice about talking in the dark in their sleeping bags. Reminded him of when he was a kid sleeping over at Jimmy Leclerc’s house, talking until all hours of the night on the old shag carpet in the basement. And just like he had with Jimmy, Jack inched closer to Kin, shifting himself as quietly as possible.

He didn’t know why he had that urge, since he was a grown man now and he didn’t have the excuse of being afraid of the dark, or the rumbles and clangs from the Leclerc’s furnace. Outside the tent there was only the steady whisper of wind. But he still felt drawn to Kin, and the low sound of his exhalations.

“What’s it like during the midnight sun? When there’s daylight twenty four hours?”

“It’s…lively. The restaurant at the hotel is open day and night since there’s always someone awake. I try to keep normal hours, but it’s hard. There’s a lot more noise, and people out and about. We pretty much hibernate in the winter and make up for it in the summer.”

“Must be strange. I guess you get used to it.”

“Yeah. It’s just the way it is. Everyone has blackout curtains. But there’s always a party going on somewhere. Once—”

Jack waited a few heartbeats. “Once what?”

“My brother snuck off and went fishing with his buddies in the middle of the night. They ‘borrowed’ a boat, and of course they got caught since there they were in the middle of the bay, clear as day. Even in the winter, there’s always someone watching. Hard to keep secrets in Arctic Bay.”

“Have you tried?”

Kin was silent for a moment. “Everyone has something to hide.”

It was all Jack could do not to ask. But he had his own secrets, and it was best to keep it all locked away, no matter how safe it felt cocooned in the dark with Kin. Anything Jack said tonight could haunt him in the dawn.

“That’s why I like coming out here. There’s only the land, and it keeps all its secrets.”

“How about the polar bears?”

Kin chuckled. “They’re the worst gossips. Never tell a polar bear something you don’t want the whole world to know.”

“I’ll keep that in mind next time I’m shooting the breeze with one.” Jack flexed his fingers, rubbing his bare hands together. “Christ it’s cold. I dropped my gloves.”

“Here.”

As material rustled, Jack expected the flashlight to come on. But his heart skipped a beat as Kin spoke.

“Give me your hands.” Kin’s voice was closer.

Jack’s mouth went dry, and he heard his heartbeat thumping in his ears the way he could when he wore earplugs on planes. He shimmied his arms out of the sleeping bag and fumbled for Kin. When their fingers brushed together, he had to bite back a gasp at the flare of desire in his belly.

Smoothly, Kin took Jack’s hands between his and rubbed. He’d taken off his gloves, and he massaged Jack’s fingers. God, it felt good. Kin’s hands were slightly callused—more so than Jack would expect from a teacher. Granted he was also a Ranger, but a Saturday soldier didn’t usually get his hands that dirty.

“Why didn’t you say anything? Frostbite can happen really easily out here. You have to be careful. Your fingers are way too cold.”

Jack opened his mouth to give some kind of excuse, but any words were lost in a strangled gurgle when his index finger was enveloped by wet heat. Kin sucked, and his tongue swirled around, rough and slick at the same time. Jack was glad he wasn’t standing, since so much blood rushed to his cock that he likely would have gotten lightheaded.

Saddle Up for a Steamy Ride (NSFW)! Spaghetti Western is Coming Soon! #cowboy #romance

SpagettiWestern_EM Lynley

There is nothing more exciting for an author than to show off a new cover that’s really wonderful.

Except maybe to see the new cover on a bestseller list, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

I’m thrilled to share the cover (and a NSFW excerpt from the book!) and tell you about the latest installment in my Delectable Series, featuring men in the world of food and wine.

It’s fun to pair up opposites and see where the rough edges will crop up—and how they try to smooth them over. So it was a real joy to set my chef Riley Emerson, fresh from several years of working in Paris, against Colby Zane, born-and-bred cattle rancher who didn’t know a patisserie from a potholder—till he met Riley.

The fun didn’t stop there, because I set the story on the Rocking Z Ranch in Colorado. I’ve only been to the state once and it left such an impression on me that I couldn’t wait to find a story that belonged there.

And horses… yes there are quite a few in this one. The Rocking Z has been forced to bring in paying guests who come for the fresh air, gorgeous scenery and horseback riding. They certainly didn’t come for the grub, but after they hire Riley to fancy-up the menu, all that might change. There’s plenty of action on the trail, too.

As the cook at the guest ranch, one of Riley’s duties is taking the antique chuck wagon out for an authentic trailside dinner for the guests, and events that occur during these dinners are some of the key scenes in the book. Not only is there some awesome food, but plenty of fun, drama, and maybe a few encounters hotter than a campfire!

One of the most enjoyable parts of the research was discovering chuck wagon lore. Chuck wagons were a huge part of the west for a short period of time. When ranchers had to move a lot of cattle very long distances, between the ranch and the grazing grounds, or to the sale lot, they were on the trail for days. The chuck wagon provided not only food, but carried their sleeping gear, and the cook (called Cookie) often provided medical and dental services. Ouch! I think I’d just live with the pain rather than let Cookie mess with my mouth.

I’ve got recipes in Spaghetti Western, including several using sourdough, and I even show how easy it is to make and use a starter.

Check out the beautiful cover by LC Chase, who found me a palomino just like the one Colby rides.

Cordon-Blue trained pastry chef Riley Emerson arrives in Aspen, Colorado for a summer season at the best restaurant in town, only to discover his jerk of a boyfriend has dumped him, leaving his heart and his summer plans in tatters. Doubting himself and longing for a change of pace, he takes a low-paying position as chef at a guest ranch, the Rocking Z. The scenery is gorgeous, but he expects that nature up close and personal can’t hold a candle to his exciting Paris lifestyle.

When born-and-bred cattle rancher Colby Zane spots a newcomer letting himself be pawed at by a passel of horny cowboys at Aspen’s Club Rawhide, he doesn’t think twice before rushing in, throwing the guy over his shoulder, and rescuing him from the volatile situation. Sober, Riley Emerson turns out to be sweet and sexy, but not interested in more than a one-night stand with Colby. Initially disdainful of the guest ranch side of the business, Colby’s over the moon when Riley late arrives as the new cook on his family’s ranch.

But all’s not well at the Rocking Z. Unsurmountable financial problems force them to rely on a cash infusion from an outside investor, Fitz Wellington. Only Fitz is hot for Colby, and he won’t sign on the dotted line without some very personal incentives. The future of the ranch is at stake, and Colby’s just desperate enough to go along, but saving the Z might mean losing Riley.

Excerpt:

Let me set this scene up: Chef Riley and cowboy Colby have started a relationship on the ranch. Colby thinks Riley just wants to be friends with benefits, but Colby wants a real relationship. So Colby’s trying to avoid spending time with Riley. Only today Colby has to drive Riley and the chuck wagon out to a remote spot on the ranch.

chuckwagonTwenty minutes later they passed the spot where they’d spent the night on their first date. First and last. Riley bit his lip and pretended his heart wasn’t aching. He couldn’t forget how sweet Colby had been that night, riding behind him on Granite, holding him close, and how they’d started out fucking, but ended up much more intimate and tender.

The spot was still on the horizon behind them when the wagon hit a rut and the whole thing shifted sending Riley into Colby’s lap again. Worse, something inside shifted and crashed as the wagon righted itself.

“What the—?” Colby stopped the horses and hopped down. He hooked the reins on a prong. “You better get down here too.”

Riley carefully climbed down, but tumbled the last step and landed at Colby’s feet. Colby helped him up ungraciously.

“Something’s busted in there.” He unlatched the door and opened it cautiously. Nothing came flying out, but when Riley peered in he saw one cabinet had come undone and tubs of marinating meat had come free. An upper cabinet door had also popped open.

“I’ll take care of it.” Riley pushed Colby out of the way and climbed inside, bending so his head wouldn’t hit the low ceiling. Luckily none of the tubs had opened up or broken or there would be a tidal wave of marinade sloshing around on the floor. Colby climbed in behind Riley and together they stowed the tubs of meat, hands and arms and legs bumping as they worked to secure everything in the cramped quarters.

sexy cowboyRiley didn’t know about Colby, but every time their hands came into contact, the temperature in the little wagon spiked. He couldn’t breathe in the cramped, almost airless space. Colby was so close, not exactly smelling like he’d just showered, but arousing all the same. It was torture being so near him again and knowing the body snatchers had turned Colby into a bastard almost overnight.

There was one cabinet still open, and Riley stood up to reach it. He moved too quickly and overbalanced, flailing around for something to stop his fall and taking down a container of flour. It scattered like white rain, all over the counter, the floor, Riley, and Colby, making the smooth surface of the floor slippery. Riley went down again, knocking Colby on his back. He broke Riley’s fall perfectly, and now they were face-to-face, Riley spread out over Colby.

Colby stared up and Riley reached for anything to help him get up. He thought Colby might punch him.

He never expected for Colby to put a hand behind his head and pull him down for a deep, hungry kiss.

palominoColby wasn’t sure what came over him when he crushed Riley close and took that kiss he’d been fantasizing about practically since he’d seen Riley that afternoon, especially after he’d changed into shorts that showed off his shapely calves. Damn Riley and damn Marcus all to hell for breaking Colby’s two days of staying away. One smile from Riley, the way his pretty blue eyes widened when he saw Colby, and Colby was doomed. He wondered how long he could keep up the bastard routine because it hurt like hell to see fear in Riley’s eyes.

Colby almost lost it right then and there when Riley landed face down in his lap. It would have been so easy and so enjoyable to thread his fingers through Riley’s soft hair and let him unzip Colby and—

Now, Riley lay sprawled on top of Colby, their mouths still pressed together, pouring passion and loneliness into a kiss as mind-blowing as the first one they’d shared up on the ridge not five minutes back on this same trail.

“Colby,” Riley gasped the word as he sucked in air. “What…?”

“Later. Later.” The last thing Colby wanted was to stop and talk—or think. He wanted Riley bad. Not for himself, but to apologize. “Right now, let me make it up to you.” He rolled over so they were facing each other on their sides, still on the flour-covered floor of the old chuck wagon. He pushed Riley’s shirt up and kissed his smooth, flat abs. Any doubts about whether Riley was into this flew out the window when Riley shuddered and moaned.

“Mmm. Yeah.”

Colby unzipped Riley’s shorts and boxers, then slid them down so he could get some of Riley’s cock into his mouth. He liked the way Riley clutched at his hair and lay back, letting Colby do what he wanted. Using hands and mouth, Colby had Riley hard as a rock in no time. Colby’s cock was painfully stiff too, had been practically since they’d both come in to the wagon. Ignoring his own desire, he did everything he knew Riley liked, flicking his tongue across the slit, sucking his balls one at a time, and gripping the shaft of his cock tight while taking him in deep so he pressed against the back of Colby’s throat.

“Good, Colby. Slow down. Gonna come real soon.”

“Okay,” Colby said around Riley’s huge dick, then he started humming, the way he learned from a guy he’d met at Rawhide, and rubbing the spot just behind Riley’s balls.

It worked like magic and Riley made a sweet little whimper and shot his load down Colby’s throat, leaving him choking and nearly gagging. He had to concentrate to keep breathing and not embarrass himself.

“God, that was quick and dirty. Really dirty.” Riley wiped Colby’s face and his hand came away with a fine dusting of flour. “You look good enough to eat. Get your pants down.”

“We don’t have time. You have the dinner.”

“I wish I could just say forget the dinner and do something filthy to you. I missed you so much. What time is it?”

“Almost four thirty.”

Riley frowned. “I can take care of you fast.”

Colby shook his head. He didn’t want it to be like that. Riley deserved more. “Later. Tonight. Can I come by after the dinner’s over?” Colby helped Riley get his pants back up. “I owe you an apology and an explanation. A lot’s been happening and—”

“Yes. That’s fine. Come over later and tell me everything.” Riley kissed the top of Colby’s head, so forgiving Colby felt like even more of a cad. A quick blowjob was no way to make up for the kind of dick-headed behavior he’d been guilty of the past few days. It wasn’t Riley’s fault that Colby was a coward and would rather run from a wonderful guy than get his feelings hurt.

“Let’s clean up in here and get over to North Point.”

“Maybe it was North Paddock after all.”

Colby messed Riley’s hair up, sending clouds of flour floating around them. “You.”

“You sure you can’t stay for the dinner?”

Colby had forgotten he’d done everything to avoid the chuck wagon dinner and Riley. “Well—”

“Cause I have a nice piece of meat with your name on it.” Riley winked.

“How could I turn that down?”

“You better not or you’ll owe me more than a quickie in a chuck wagon.”

“I already do.”

“Damned right. And I’m going to make sure you pay up.”

Colby knew he had a dumb grin on his face. Why did Riley make him so happy one minute and so freaking scared the next?
